Apps and AI, explained simply
You don't need to be "good with technology" to get real help from your phone or computer. This guide explains, in plain words, what apps and AI can do for you, how to stay safe, and a few trustworthy tools to start with. Take it one step at a time.
What is an app?
An app is a small program on your phone, tablet or computer that does one job — video calls with family, reading the news, paying a bill.
You get apps from the official store on your device (App Store on iPhone, Google Play on Android). Only install apps from there.
What is AI, and what can it do for me?
AI assistants are apps you can talk or type to, like asking a very well-read helper. They can:
- Explain a letter or a bill in simple words.
- Help you write a message or an email.
- Answer questions about almost anything.
- Read text out loud or turn your voice into text.
- Give you ideas for recipes, trips or gifts.
Many have a free version.
What AI cannot do
AI can sound confident and still be wrong. Always double-check anything about your health, money or legal matters with your doctor, pharmacist, bank or a professional.
Never type passwords, bank details or your ID number into an AI chat.
Staying safe: 6 simple rules
- Your bank, the tax office or the police will never ask you to share your PIN, password or a code sent to your phone on an unexpected call. If anyone asks, it's a scam — hang up.
- Feeling rushed is a warning sign. Scammers create panic ("act now!"). Stop, and call back on a number you already know.
- Scammers can now copy a family member’s voice with AI. Agree on a family "safe word" to check that a call asking for money is real.
- Don't click links in unexpected messages or emails. Open the official app or type the website yourself.
- Use a password manager so every account has a different, strong password — you only remember one.
- Keep your phone updated. Updates fix security holes.

Set up the apps together; turn on bigger text in phone settings; save important numbers as contacts; show how to make a video call; write the steps on paper.
Small, patient steps work best.
