What it is

Kilo Code is an MIT-licensed AI coding agent with Code, Plan, Ask and Debug agents, parallel runs in git worktrees and checkpoints, available for VS Code, JetBrains, the CLI and cloud agents. The extension is free; you pay for models through your own keys, local models or the Kilo Gateway at provider rates, optionally via Kilo Pass credit bundles, and teams can add a per-user plan. Heavy agent sessions can use a lot of tokens, and the 2026 rebuild means older guides may not match the current version.

Standout capability

Model-agnostic open-source agent with no markup on inference.

Community sentiment

What people praise

Users value being able to use any model, including their own keys and local models, with no markup, and like the open-source code and specialised agent modes.

What people complain about

Reviewers mention heavy token use on long tasks, uneven reliability between versions, and friction over credit purchases and refunds.
